Melbourne based 6-piece Americana outfit Front Porch are a stand out in Melbournes Live music scene, performing all over the city’s many live music venues as well as Victoria’s Bluegrass festivals and club nights. The bands' sound, simply put, is 'FUN'.
The band is made up of Maxine Sutcliffe (double bass), Robert Goodge (mandolin), Steve Bird (guitar), Stephen Lebsanft (trombone), Peter Folino (banjo) and Michael Davis (drums).
Front Porch has grown beyond being just ‘The Bluegrass band with a trombone in it’, coherently and tastefully incorporating the styles of bluegrass, Western swing, dixie-land, ragtime, jazz, Tex-Mex Latin, and even 60s folk. Formed in 2017, the band has steadily crafted a unique live music experience, a fresh, authentic and vibrant sound with nostalgic undertones underpinned by humour and humility.
After a few quiet years over COVID Front Porch relaunched in 2024 with ‘The Tootgarook Tapes’, an EP made up of songs the band had self-produced over 2019 and 2022 that captures the bands captivating and unique style. The members of Front Porch also appear as studio musicians on acclaimed Australian singer Stephen Cummings' 2023 album '100 Years From Now'.
The band also launched an expanded 6-piece lineup in late 2024 in a series of popular shows on Melbourne’s Northside. With guitarist Steve Bird swapping his acoustic for an electric, and the addition of drummer Michael Davis, this new version of Front Porch brings a more upbeat and dance-party vibe, leaning heavily into the band’s Western Swing roots and instrumentation.
In 2025, Front Porch will be taking their act to venues across Melbourne and beyond!
